New Partner Spotlight: Jennifer Cabrera

Apr 26, 2023

Earlier this year, Vicente LLP announced our rebranding and that six of our top attorneys were elevated to partners. We’re proud to share a little more about our exceptional colleagues as we continue this special New Partner Spotlight series with Jennifer Cabrera

Jennifer works with Vicente LLP's clients in New York and New Jersey, advising on regulatory and licensing matters.  She holds degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, Harvard Law School, and the University of Cambridge. In 2023, Jennifer was recognized by her peers in "Best Lawyers" list for her work in cannabis law.

What attracted you to the legal field?

I’m the third generation of lawyers (starting with my Cuban grandmother) in my family, so I always had a feeling I’d carry on the tradition. My undergraduate degrees in English and Philosophy weren’t exactly pulling me away from the family business.

What attracted you to working in the cannabis, psychedelics and emerging therapies industries?

I worked in commercial litigation and arbitration in Manhattan for over a decade before joining Vicente—first at a Wall Street firm, then at a small boutique firm. Clients are often (understandably) unhappy when they are in litigation, so I was looking to make a change. I had assisted a family friend that was starting a cannabis business in 2014 in Massachusetts and liked the work. In 2019 New York and New Jersey seemed poised to legalize so I made the change, and I couldn’t be happier.

What is your specialty and what do you think differentiates you from other lawyers that clients could choose?

I focus on licensing and regulatory work for New Jersey and New York, with a little corporate M&A work thrown in for good measure. I love helping small and medium-sized businesses enter new markets or build a new business from scratch. I care about my clients and will always try to be a one-stop shop. Many clients who initially hire us for a limited engagement (i.e., for licensing) come back and ask us to handle their real estate and corporate work.

What markets do you see having big developments in the next 6 months / Where will the big opportunities be in 2023?

New York is going to see a wave of licensing in late 2023, along with the associated real estate and corporate work. New Jersey continues to be a strong market for M&A, real estate, and licensing.

How do you see Vicente being a differentiator for companies seeking legal services and consulting in the industry you serve?

Vicente LLP has been doing cannabis legal work in every major US market since 2010. There are many firms that have recently opened cannabis practice groups, but I can count on one hand the number of firms that have significant experience doing this work. For corporate work, clients come to us because we already know how to compliantly run a transaction—they aren’t paying us to figure it out for the first time.
