Sally Kent Peebles Discusses Cannabis Politics on Florida Public Radio’s “The Florida Roundup”
Aug 16, 2019
Tweets, calls and emails flooded the WLRN Florida Public Radio studio on Friday, August 9, 2019, when VS Jacksonville attorney and Florida Medical Cannabis Advisory Committee member Sally Kent Peebles discussed cannabis and Florida politics on "The Florida Roundup." The popular broadcast also featured guests Representative Shevrin D. Jones, journalist Dara Kam, and Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Director of Cannabis, Holly Bell.
New Ballot Push to Legalize Adult-Use Marijuana
When asked about well-known Florida attorney John Morgan's declaration of support for a 2020 ballot push to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida, Sally stated that she was "not surprised at all and very excited Morgan is now on board.” She noted that there have been a few recreational marijuana pushes by other campaigns that didn't gain traction, likely due to funding. Dara Kam and Sally agreed that this initiative could be different, as it has the potential to bring in more monetary contributions.
So, What Can We Expect in 2020?
“If they can get the funding, I believe that the Florida voters will pass it,” Sally expressed. A poll came out recently that showed 60% of Floridians in favor of legalizing recreation marijuana; however, getting the amendment before voters will be hard. She explained that it is a huge lift and really comes down to finances, but if they can get the right finances, they can “get boots on the ground to gather signatures and educate the naysayers.”
