Overview
Alex J. Berger serves as counsel in Vicente LLP’s Oregon office, where he focuses on regulatory matters for the cannabis, hemp-derived CBD and THC and psychedelics industries. His practice centers on state and federal regulatory compliance and licensing in the medical and adult-use cannabis sectors, the hemp consumables industry and the emerging state-regulated psilocybin field. He represents a broad base of clients, including cultivators, processors, wholesalers, dispensaries and ancillary businesses, such as software providers and equipment vendors, ranging from smaller “mom-and-pop” operations to large multistate and multinational companies. Alex also advises clients in the psilocybin and natural medicine services sector, including manufacturers, service centers, healing centers and facilitators.
As a regulatory advisor, Alex assists cannabis, hemp and psychedelics businesses in navigating a complicated and often confusing web of local, state and federal laws. His work encompasses licensing, regulatory compliance, investigations, food and drug regulations, and land use matters—an often-overlooked but vital component of operating in highly regulated industries. His goal is to help clients navigate an evolving and complex regulatory landscape while building lawful, compliant and successful businesses.
Alex has served on numerous state agency rules advisory committees and contributed to the National Cannabis Industry Association’s public comments to the FDA regarding scientific data and information on cannabis-derived compounds. He previously served on NCIA’s Packaging and Labeling Committee and has spoken at cannabis, hemp and psychedelics industry conferences nationwide.
Prior to joining Vicente, Alex was an attorney and shareholder at Emerge Law Group, Oregon’s first full-service boutique cannabis and psychedelics law firm. Earlier in his career, he practiced at Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt in its general and commercial litigation groups. During law school, Alex served on the Hastings Law Journal editorial staff, externed for the Honorable Edward M. Chen at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and interned as a Certified Law Clerk for the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.
